Venice Sailaway

We sailed out of Venice at around 9:00 this morning. This is one of the most beautiful sailaway's anywhere in the world. The ships dock on the West end of the island, but when they arrive and depart, it's done through a large canal between two islands and passes right in front of Piazza San Marco. We woke up to find our ship had moved to a different berth in the middle of the night to make room for a Costa ship. There was also a Royal Caribbean ship across the way and an MSC ship arrived as we were awaiting our sailaway.

We found our way to the "secret" deck which is situated right on top of the navigational bridge. You couldn't ask for a better vantage point for the sail away…few crowds and virtually unobstructed view of a stunning city.

The rest of the day proceeded in typical cruise fashion. We had breakfast, then lunch, picked up some gelato at the new International Café (which is a great addition), and played some trivia. We won in the afternoon and got a tote bag which is nice.

Dinner tonight was at the Crown Grill and I think it was the best one I've had on a cruise ship. They charge extra, but it's worth it. The charge even more if you want a 1.5-2.0 pound lobster, but there's a 4 oz lobster on the regular menu and our waiter, Tony from Portugal, even brought me two of them to start with. He even offered a second Filet to us…which I couldn't imagine. He said he once had a customer that ate 7 of them in a single sitting…although it took him 3 hours. After finishing that, he said "Tony, could I have some dessert."

After dinner we went to Crooners to listen to a piano man and have a martini. Along with that, I had a sampling of the gourmet olives stuffed with things like blue cheese, garlic, jalapeno, etc. Very good. Now, it's time to sleep…we have another exciting day on the Adriatic tomorrow, then Athens on Monday. See you then.
